The Great Wildebeest Migration is the annual journey of 1.5 million wildebeests, 200,000 zebra, and 300,000 gazelles across the Serengeti in Tanzania and Maasai Mara in Kenya, spanning approximately 1,800 miles. Characterized by spectacular river crossings and predator-prey interactions and caused by seasonal rains, it is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

Which is Peak Season in the Serengeti: Responding to what you wish to see — Calving Season(a peak season in the Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) when 500,000 calves are born) January–March; or dramatic Mara River crossings in the Northern Serengeti, July–September. Grumeti River crossings can be seen in June–July, and the herds returning south in November–December.

In addition to the thousands of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle during the migration, there are also plenty of lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and crocodiles lurking about (particularly at river crossings). The Serengeti and Maasai Mara ecosystems also host other wildlife such as giraffes and elephants, as well as antelopes like eland and impala.
